Ok, what I am working with is a really old POS system.  The amp was probably pretty good in its' day, but it has seen better... the mixer is in the same category.


- One side of the amp is burnt out.  It is a CARVIN 1000 something. OLD.

- The player itself is probably decent for their use, but it is OLD and starting to get jammed up, etc.  It is a JVC 6 disk with cartridge set up.  It has to be serviced because the cartridge sometimes gets "stuck" in the player, or the single tray part of it gets screwy where the internal tray gets stuck in the machine, and only the drawer part slides out.  (wacky)  You have to power it off and on a few times for it to unjam itself.  I think if they got it serviced or reconditioned it would still do the job for them very well. They have a system where every song number in the book is listed as such... Cartridge - CD- Song (32 cartridges, preloaded semipermanantly).

- The mixer is a Rolls RM65 MixMax 6x4 Mixer...one of the channels doesn't work at all, and I think some of the inputs are a bit worn out.

- The effects unit is a really old Zoom unit.

- Has a furman power conditioner with slide out lights

- Aside from that they are using two Squire 15" speakers and a non powered Peavey monitor.  That is all the system has... No compressor, the mics are just old no namers.  They have had this gear forever, and they were the first real karaoke bar in this area...

The owners are not exactly KNOWN for growth or improvement. Kinda the old "it's good enough" mentality...

Now, can this player be fixed up reasonably?  They probably don't really want to replace it...  The mixer will need replaced, they still sell this model, but I am thinking maybe a Yamaha with built in effects maybe.  This gear will be used 6 nights a week, at 8 hours straight or more...

There are several packaged systems out there that could replace what is there for under $1000.

I would recomend replacing, because you will get a better warranty, and may cost more to fix old stuff in the long run, than to buy new.

And Jeezs...If the stuff is being used that much, it must be making him money...So why not get new?  It for sure is going to sound better, and possibly bring in more customers, or hold the regulars theere longer!

About the only thing worth keeping is the power strip.

The JVC can be fixed, but it depends completely on local repair shop talent and ability, unless you can afford the time to send it out and wait for it to return.....Then the thing to do is buy a new tripple tray to use until the JVC is returned and keep the tripple as a backup.....The only problem there is you must remove all discs from carts, and that's a real pain......

I would fix the JVC and sell it....The last time I looked, used JVC carts commanded a high price....People that still use them can't buy additional carts to support their added music.

If I were them, I would rip it all to PC, then buy a decent "Chiwanese" mixer along with a new amp and speakers....They can keep the Carvin to use on the monitor....And add single or tripple tray player for back up or keep the JVC as a tray use only device.....$2000 would do it all if you built the PC yourself.

The yamaha 16/6FX would replace your mixer and the effects processor. The effects on this board are not going to match an external unit, but they are pretty close and defiantely do the job for karaoke. That is $329.00 on most music sites.

I agree with the accessment of using the existing amp to run the monitor and buying a new amp for the mains. Without knowing the exact specs of the speakers, I would assume that they are going to be something in the 500watt RMS range, which seems to be about standard for good 15" speakers. The Behringer actually gets good reviews for only $300.

As for a player, there is nothing wrong with a single disc player since you are on a budget. A bit more work during your show, but not a pain by any means. You can usually buy the single disc RSQ/JVC players brand new on EBay for around $100.

So, that's $730 to replace everything, or you could just do them one by one...

Since they are doing karaoke this much, tell them it's time to replace some of the equipment.


Time to replace amp with something more modern and reliable.



You can kill 2 birds with one stone by getting a mixer with effects, a Yamaha or Mackie.


Now about your player....It's a JVC XLGM-800 player, I have 2 of them and I network with 2 other hosts that use them. Since this player has not been manufactured in over 10 years parts are getting harder & harder to come by. The last time I had to take in one of these players it cost me $225 to get fixed. This is a great player and I would not give up this player. I would recommend that you get yours fixed. This is a great system because the discs last longer, no human hands touch the discs, meaning that there is less chance of finger prints & scratches.

JVC has stopped manufacturing the cartridges, so cartridges are also harder to come by. You can get some directly from JVC but they are $20 a pop, karaoke wharehouse has some, but once they sell out - that's it, or you can find some on ebay, there was one guy that was selling them 20 at a time, used cartridges, I got 20 from him at a great price for used cartridges. I'm up to cartridge #65 in my system for the 5 years I have been doing karaoke, been a DJ for 10 years now.

The replacements for this player have been looking slim lately, JVC/RSQ have stopped production on there 222/333 single and triple tray players. The RSQ MK-22 have a problem with them as per my supplier, they sent back their whole stock of them and won't get any in for at least 2-3 weeks till the problem is fixed with them. RSQ has a 10 disc cartridge player out there, but I can not see myself replacing all my cartridges @ $25 a pop.
