I have noticed every couple of years my crowd changes. We always
have a mish mosh of people. Everything from your white collar to your druggys.
The bar owner has finally barred most of the drug people. One of them was a bartender. I had been begging him to get rid of them for about a year. I'm getting a much nicer crowd now. A lot of 30-40 yr olds and clean cut 20 yr olds.
Have you noticed crowd changes? Does your venue owner do anything to keep out
the riff raff?

I get a little surprised when people are still talking about drunks and needing liquid courage. And little things that we solved long ago.. Most of our singers are seasoned with many years of karaoke or band experience. They are not trying to be stars they sing for the pure pleasure and the friendships and bonds with other singers and the crowd There are many people now if they go out they go to a karaoke bar whether they sing or not... Even if they go on vacation...It is a way of life and a social scene that is unique in its own way...
Drugs are not tolerated in any way shape or form in these bars.. Actually I have seen rough bars with reputations gradually changed with a steady dose of weekend karaoke..

LMAO, tell me you meant to say "White collar".
In which case I still find it offensive, because why must "White Collar" preclude being a druggy ? I was both for years !

In the year that we have been at our current locatin I have seen a move from the older crowd to a good mix of older and younger singers. One of the things I believe that has helped is that we keep up to date with our music and always working to achieve a better sound.

2 year turnaround as a rule here. When you finally get a good solid base of regulars, someone within the group messes it up & they tend to disperse leaving a few stragglers behind that either leave or stay & hook up with other singers becoming a "new" group of regulars. I think I have 1 person that I know that still comes in regularaly to my show from 1994.

My mom thinks of Karaoke as a "fad". Now those of us that have been in it since the beginning like Tig have seen phases... in Portland, I've seen so many peaks and valleys just in the last ten years!
Personally, I hit a peak and a valley with the place that I started out at as a customer, and finally as a kj. They totally changed their design inhouse. It's still karaoke, but no longer the comfortable place it was. Qnd of course they continue to have no pay for the hosts, so they constantly have a lot of kj turnaround. Those that stay are mediocre at best... the bad kjs leave fairly quickly, and the good ones move on to other things, like I did.
But the process of how they changed the place... lost many of the old regulars!

My only current karaoke night is Tuesday night.
Tuesdays are an odd night out. My crowd is mainly 21 to 25 with about 25% or less being over 25. The crowd changes from week to week. I have regulars but at best I see them every 3 or 4 weeks. The people that are there every week are bar regulars and none of them sing. If they do it's once in a blue moon.

Boy I need to pay attention more. I did mean collar. I changed it as soon as I read the post. And you are right about druggys. But I couldn't think of a better way to describe it. I should have put the undesirable. You know the type - they come in with no money and mooch off of everyone obviously on something.
Lonman's desription of people coming and going somes it up perfect. That is mostly what I see.

I have found in most of the "BARS" I've played at besides the local regulars who are there daily or at least weekly it is the BARTENDERS who seem to dictate the crowds. 'Don't get me wrong I have my regular karaoke crowd which is growing from word of mouth as this group goes out 4 times a week at various places to sing.
But it seems the bartenders ( Female) bring in with them there own crowds - either girfiends or boy friends or clientele from other bars they work at. I have seen my Saturday gig go from a country music loving crowd to a head banging can't be loud enough crowd. -----

Crowd changes at one of the places I frequented for 3 years, oh yes...I would say every 8 months or so...but this is LA where transcience is the very norm...

I've got 6 shows in 5 nights every week steady (not including private gigs) and i got a lot of crossover customers who check out 2 to 3 shows a week. Friday nights i have a lot of groups (like 10 to 15 people) maybe 5 or 6 different groups like these that attend on different weeks. Crazy nights are when they all show up on the same night. But I end up with a lot of the same faces showing up at most of the shows. I tend to suck up a bit to new faces and try to introduce them around a bit and that helps with them coming back as repeat customers. But just keeping your flow smooth and making it sound great and a light not to serious attitude helps.
