The novelty of recording singers in this area has gradually gone away.. Tracking, mixing, and mastering a decent cd that plays in the home stereo system, a portable player and the one in the car is next to impossible.I wouldnt charge for it. With my system I can record directly out of the mixer (with full efx) which really sucks or I can record 2 mics out of the dbx 266xl with digital music before it leaves the computer. Or I can mute the music and track the vocals only..
Ok lets develop a senario such as this..Bob wants to record some songs for his grand kids that they can listen to for years virtually after he is gone... Here is the deal I make with him..Nights when it isnt totally nuts, I'll track 2 or 3 songs with his vocal only. Then in a calmer and quasi studio atmosphere I import his vocals and the music into a software such as Sonar3. I stereo the vocals for efx play the mixdowns thru the system I'll put a paramametric eq on his vocal and tailor his range etc. Apply efx such as plate, spring, chorus at the right places and play over and over and tweak until we are satisfied with the results... At that time I'll mute the music tracks and export the vocals into wav files. Can actually give him wav files of some of the different tracks ... Then I'll ask him if he wants this on a cd or a flash drive. What I charge him if I do is nobodies business and I sure as hell havnt broken any laws... He has studio quality vocal tracks that he can take to a professional studio if he wants... This is a legal way to charge for recordings...
Then later he can import into software with the music. I havnt used it them for a long time but I think you can use Cakewalk Homestudio or Music Creator which arent that expensive (not like sonar3).. He can listen to them forever in this fashion or burn his own cd. and give to the kids...Anybody that has a problem with this operation has problems that are not directly connected with the music business....
