Anybody handy with a computer? (well, handier than ME......... probably everyone)

I am having a problem, and I know it's some little dumb "error" thingee, but I don't know how to fix it. And it's tickin' me off big time.   :crying2:

Since last week I keep getting a "low disk space" error. Now... before you go thinking I'm THAT stupid, all cookies are cleared- always are.  It wont let me do alot of normal computer things cause it's says I don't have enough disk space. Like- uh- adding effects to my songs in CEP...... or changing the volume of a track, or mixing the 2 tracks. (that's the big "tickin' me off" part)

I can't save docs in Word, or nothing. I always keep an eye on space- due to having songs on my comp- I just had over 25 GB left. Now it's saying less than 10 MB. That's not possible.

Whats wIeRdEr....... I have deleted tons of stuff. All my songs from SS are on CD and off my comp, all my pics have been put on CD & deleted (yes guys, my recycle bin is empty- gimme some credit). Those alone should have freed up tons of space. Plus- I removed LimeWire, WinMX, PalTalk, my cd label maker program, MusicMatch jukebox, and other stuff. Crum, I have nothing left but CEP- and it wont work. It still shows the same amount of disk space.

Anybody have any ideas? I looked on the net- tons of people seem to have had this prob with WinXP, but nobody named a solution.  Sorry, I can't pay you, lol. (or else I'd call a computer tech) But any ideas would be helpful, if anyone else has had this prob.

TY

you could have a virus... there are some that will write over unused space on a hard drive, sucking up available resoures, and as you have found out, make it almost impossible to run any programs because Windows can't find enough resources, ya know I make housecalls right? LOL for computers I mean heheheh - tig

Yeah, Tig hun- you've told me about those "house calls".

I may just have to give ya directions too   - if you really think you can fix my prob. You're what - 30 minutes from me?

I know it's gotta be something like that, but SO many places online are talking about WINXP having this prob? Thought maybe it was a glitch in that version of windows or something??

I can't possibly afford a new comp- this darn thing isn't paid off yet, I got it less than a year ago. Sure wish I could cuss here- cause I gotta string of things I'd like to say.  :D

fixing it all depends on what bug it happens to be and if I would be able to run any utilities or Antivirus to kill it... worst case scenario is backing up what files you can and reformatting/reinstalling your operating system and programs... if you bought the PC new (Dell, compaq etc) then it should have came with a recovery CD that will reinstall windows to when ya bought it... if you don't have a recovery CD, and it is brand PC, then I should be able to download a recovery disk or all the necessary drivers from the manufacturer... if you can't run an anti virus because of the low space problem then you might try http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ ... they have a free online virus and spyware scan that can scan your PC with little space used in the install... at least it might give you the name of the bug and we can go from there... -tig

Okay, go figure this::  :shock:

I got to digging around in Windows Explorer...... seems when you uninstall KazAa, it leaves a bunch of goodies behind. There were tons of folders in there, with tons of files in them. I had like 60 zipped folders that were various kinds of virus programs. (not virusES... programs) I deleted the whole thing........ and now it says 33.7 GB........ I'm BACK!

Note to self: Never use KazAa. Don't know what it was, but magosh, there was alot of stuff in there. Feelin' a bit foolish now.

Tig- maybe I'll still invite ya down sometime, k? Since you're so sweet & all- and dying for a road trip.    I'm sure I got somethin' you can fix.  You any good with refrigerators? (freezer works, fridge quit) GMC Suburbans? (need a flexplate installed) :rotflmao:

Oh, and Tig- I had thought about reformatting. I did that once on my old comp- but I had to reinstall so much- my sound card, my modem- it skeered me.  LOL

And yes- "somewhere" I have the recovery disk. Don't know where that "somewhere" might be, but I should have it.

I tried to use the "restore to" function...... but due to "low disk space" I was unable to. (cause it said it couldn't save the "undo" data) Or some such nonsense.

I think I'm good now though. I was grasping at straws thinking maybe someone here could help- now I feel like an idiot. I've been messing with this over a week- every day- and now I fix it 5 minutes after posting here. Go figure.

Really though- thank you for offering suggestions.

Kazaa is a peer-to-peer program for downloading files... when you uninstall kazaa it removes the program but not the folder it downloads stuff into and not the folder where it stores partially downloaded files (files that have not finished downloading for various reasons) and when you use Kazaa it uses those stored files to finish downloading the files so ya don't have to start over on a file if it is halfway completed... this folder of partial downloads can become very large... now that ya have space to operate programs I suggest running any anti-virus/spyware/adware removers you might have and also it wouldn't hurt to run the online virus checker I linked to... not all anti-virus programs are the same and they can use different algorithms and virus detection tools... if one misses a virus hopefully 1 or 2 of the others will catch them... also a pure anti-virus usually isn't built to detect spyware/adware and those programs can be just as destructive as a virus but since it isn't technically a "virus", anti-virus programs can, and do, ignore them as a problem... I use 2-3 anti-virus programs and a couple different adware/spyware programs a few times a month to keep my workhorse bug free... just curious but what brand and model of PC did you buy??? good luck and feel free to ask any questions... - michael

Yeah, well- I HAD a virus program thingee.... but I think I disabled it. (?)

I bought a - dontcha laugh- a Dell. (Dimension Desktop 2400- you know, bottom of the line)

But my prior comp was from 1998, so it was a big difference for me to get this one. I woulda rather got another Gateway, but Dell was al I could afford.

I don't live off my comp- just music, pics, & internet is all I use it for. So this works for me. (WHEN it's workin' for me of course) lol

I'll check out that link Tig, thank you.

You'll have to excuse my lingo once in a while- hubby speaks Arkansas, and sometimes it rubs off I think, haha.

If you really are running out of disk space, you could by a second hard drive for about $50-75. Just hook them up as a master (your old one) and slave (your new one) and everything will boot off of your master while you use the slave for storage (all of those MP3 files and whatever else!!). I do this just to make my processing times faster...

Here is one tip on how to track it down. Go to the desktop and select a folder and do information on it. It should tell you how much space it's taking up. Usually, you can find out which folder holds that extra 20 gig or so. Just follow down the folders until you find which final folder holds that extra space. That's how I usually track down when things like that happens.

Topher- my disk space is okay now. I dunno what was up with that, but I'm back to where I was. Guess I just wont ever use KazAa again, lol.

Eben- That's pretty much how I found that folder. I usually dig aroung in Windows Explorer, seems you can find alot more files there that you can't see other places. And yah- it stumped me to see the KazAa folder- and it's size was unbelievable.

TY guys for answering.

A couple things you can do to keep this from happening in the future:

1. Install Ad-Aware and run it at least once a week - update before you run!
2. Install and update your anti-virus software regularly.  If you don't want to buy the license for Norton, McAffee or a simlar app you can always get and use AVG Anti-virus since it's uh, free?
3. Install the Google Toolbar to stop popups (or turn on the pop up stopper in the latest release of IE, or use another browser that stops popups).

These three items alone will stop 99% of the 'bad stuff' out there and likely more.  Remember to update regularly, and run ad-aware on at least a weekly basis.

Thank you, yeah- I'm kinda getting sick of the popups. Some are kinda.......uh...... "interesting", lol  ,  but I don't like my kids getting them all the time.

I don't have any Ad-Ware program I don't think. ??? Guess I need that.

Typing this message, I've already gotten like FIVE freakin' popups though, it's annoying. Maybe I'll just go download something, but I tell ya- I'm kinda scared of d/l AnYtHiNg now.

I have McAfee. (popup #6......... that stupid WinFixer thing is annoying)

It's called Ad-Aware and it's made by a company called Lavasoft.

The google toolbar is available from google.com of course.

I can assure you that if you can wipe the spyware from your system and run a basic popup blocker you'll knock 99+% of the popups out there!  I get a single popup about once every month or two.

Not sure what computer you have but if it's an XP go the program, Accessories, System Tools and the run disk clean up.  This will clear a lot of temp files for you.

Hope this helps.
