I cannot figure karaoke singing! I have been doing it for quite a few years.
When you are excellent...you are a wannabee! When you are not...you stink!!
So what is the proper singing???? I mean I have two Elvis songs on Karaoke
Singers Showcase....and I do not mean to sound like Elvis....as I like to be myself. However I finish up sounding like him!! And people think that I am out to impersonate him!

then don't DO zn Elvis song!

It's very hard to do an Elvis song and NOT end up sounding like him.

Most of us have our own unique style... but whenever you do a "cover" of a song that's very well known, especially by a famous singer like Elvis, most listeners can NOT help but compare the two, as you have found out, and most singers can NOT help but fall into that deadly trap!

I agree with knight.  I do several songs that I used to wind up sounding like.  With time and not hearing the songs constantly, my own style is getting into them now.  BUT when say "The Rose" was constantly on the radio or the jukebox, I sang it just like it, because, it's what sounded right in my head.

So it isn't something we TRY to do, when it happens, it just does.  I don't automatically think someone is an Elvis impersonator because they sound like elvis.  Now, you show up in an Elvis costume and THEN tell me you aren't trying to impersonate him, THEN I'll start laughin atcha.  LOL

That is easy to say..KS!!  I recorded various songs..whose original artist range from Marty Robbins...to Dean Martin......to GaryPuckett & the Union Gap...to the Beatles......to Don Gibson. However Elvis was so popular in his day....and so prolific as a singer that it would be virtually impossible...and I mean impossible...to avoid doing any of his songs at  any karaoke outlet here in Sydney. I mean at least 60% of the karaoke list at these outlets are Elvis Presley songs. And the karaoke crowds from age 18 to 60 like these songs.

Then I would recommend changing the PITCH or Key. IF you can. Sometimes this will help when doing another person's song!

With karaoke, you have the same original music as the artist, so it is very hard to sing your own style.  If you could change the pace or arrangement, then you might be able to sing differently than him.  Don't be so hard on yourself.

Karaoke is mostly about fun, so just have fun!  But if you post your song on SS and ask for comments or ranks, you will get people's honest opinions.  If you don't want them, don't ask for them.  That's pretty much how it works!

it isn't the same original music... try playing the karaoke version next to the original song if ya need evidence... that is why karaoke disks are labeled "in the style of" etc... compared to the originals, some have slightly different arrangements, different keys, background vocals VS no background vocals, and some are so mangled to actually be insulting to the original... some sound like someone created it on a casio keyboard in a tin can, some are edited or shortened for length, some are album renditions, some are radio edits, some are lyrically censored and some lyrics can sometimes be questioned as actually belonging to that song... as a DJ for 20+ years, I have music constantly playing in my head (helps drown out the voices) and I have seen some karaoke disks that are damn close to the original but they never match up to the original playing in my head... trust me... I know the DJ so it must be true... each manufacturer makes their own rendition based on the original but understand that it is in "the style of" and not the original... - tig

Disclaimer: there are a few sets of disks out there that have been licensed to use the original recordings (the motown disk set etc) so my opinion is not written in stone but those are the exception and not the rule...

Yes I do agree that karaoke is about fun and I have been having it for years!!
I started singing karaoke back in 1991....when the equipment was so bulky that it took half the size of a good sized room...and even then they used to tape you.
And the first song which I recorded: Teddy Bear and about 6 others And I still have the tape. I suppose that one day I'll burn them on CD..and may even submit them to SS
