Priddis allows you to make a 1:1 backup of their discs.

The basic premise deals with licensing as much as copyright law.  While the mechanical reproduction license and obtaining the master use rights for a copyrighted song would be needed if you were planning on distributing it, what most people don't understand is that if you want to format shift your CDG's for your weekly gig to MP3 you have to get the same licenses because there isn't any alternative currently.  Note that all of this is for commercial entities only.

Do I really think that anyone is going to show up and shut you down for making recordings of the singers?  No.   If they're not shutting down multi-riggers and other law breaking scum it's highly unlikely they're going to be knocking on your door anytime soon.  I'm just pointing out the lunacy in the system and what's required to do this 100% above board.

Keep in mind that the minute you charge (this is a thread about supplemental income) you'll draw a LOT of attention from both the karaoke manufacturers, HFA, RIAA and others.  Doing it legally will also require you to stock discs they want to record and only from manufacturers that specifically allow this.  What do you do when they ask to record 'Hotel California' and you only have it on SC8125?  This would have to be a requests - fulfill sort of thing over the course of a week to keep the costs down.  Requests a song you want to record this week and we'll have it for you next week sort of thing. Of course, do you record them right there and give them the CDG next week?  Technically you have to give them the disc with the recording.  I'm not prepared to stock a bunch of extra discs for something like this... but what do I know...

I have hooked up a tape deck and given singers a recording of themselves at private parties.  Nothing fancy.  Something to remember the event by and more importantly to me, maybe get a future gig out of.    Eventually will probably look to do it on CD if possible (haven't tried hooking up my unit yet).  Have also ran an audio signal into guest camcorders and have seen groups crowding around watching the playback when I'm packing up for the night - everyone seems to get a kick out of it.

We'd sell party favors at our shows.  Nothing huge, just balloons with our logo on them, streamers, little things of bubbles that we made our own labels for.  Nothing major but seemed to get the night going for some people.
