.....But I've been in business for over 13 years!
I started karaoke by singing at shows then I saw how much fun it was, especially seeing the host getting all the action. ..
I started hosting a very short time later, I think I sang once at the beginning then not again for about three years, this after doing shows 7 nights a week!
When I started to get the nerve I would try one here and there but obviously no success but I had a helluva of a time anyways.
Unfortunately when it came to judging KJ's in the past, one of the criteria's was that the KJ of the year had to perform in front of the crowd, needless to say I didn't win there but I always have my shows packed.
The answer to your question is, "NO", you don't have to sing well to be a KJ, just treat everyone with respect and remember sounding great doesn't mean that you are making money for yourself or the bar, after all, the intimidation factor loses potential customers and you being from Pomona, you need all the customers you can get................ ....
Respectfully
Rodney

I just started running my show about a month ago. I have been singing at the bar for 6 months, since I moved to Florida. I took the show over for the last guy that was running it. The owner liked me, and fired the other guy. I usually start the show, and after each rotation. Then I end the show. When it's busy I sing less. When it's slow I sing more. My singers don't have a problem with this, and even request me to sing certain songs. I help them if, they ask me to. I make sure that EVERYONE gets their turn, and that they all get applause. I work the late comers into the show, by injecting them into the rotaion, at different places. My show is growing little by little. As a matter of fact, the guy across the street, has been slow the last few weeks, cause his crowd is coming to me. I also update my collection, just about every week. But I think it depends on the crowd. My crowd happens to like it when I sing. At the place I use to go to, when I was in NY, the KJ did the same thing, and none of us had a problem with it. And that was a REALLY busy place. I don't feel that the KJ singing is a problem. Just as long as it's in his turn, and not skipping people to sing their song.

Not a bad idea for the KJ to get things started. Some KJ's tend to hog a show, and it may not be necessary to sing at the start of every rotation. But, you are in charge! I wouldn't always sing the last song, though. But if your group doesn't mind, keep it up!

As far as a KJ being a good singer, who cares? His/her job isn't singing, it is running the equipment for those coming out to sing. Does it matter if a radio DJ can sing well or not? Of course not. Same thing basically.

I'm in florida, so we have to close down at 2:30. I finish the show at 2:10, and by that time the karaoke had wound down, then I have time to sing the last song. Like I said, tho, I go in the rotation. If it's 2 hours between my songs, so be it. I do my showing off if I go on Wednesdays, which a friend of mine runs.

Good enough! We have to close down here around 1:15 or so. Everyone out by 1:30, if not before. I also find it interesting that something we all take part in for fun is called a "show" by some. I know a KJ who thinks it is his show!

We, as most of the KJ's we know, call ours a "show" as well!!
Hmm, I'm not sure what else they are called, maybe a PARTY!!!!

I have seen and heard KJs who could sing well and a couple who could not. It doesn't matter if you are only running things.
