Has anyone yet pondered the possibility of adding a chatroom to the Karaoke forum ? Perhaps have a room where people can chat back and forth. Even meet once a week at a scheduled time for live chatting. Something as an option to the stationary boards. Might even be a voice type chat as in Paltalk, or Yahoo voice rooms. Just a thought

I was thinking the same thing last night, Steve. There were a lot of people "chatting" via the threads .... and I kept thinking it would be cool if we could all gather and just live-chat in one place. The voice component might be a little tough 'cause of the "turn taking" issues, but I do like the live-chat possibility. Not sure how much work that would be (Phill?????) .....

Have a great day!
Cindy

Cindy, You bring up a good point. In voice chat type venues usually there is one person talking, and others sitting around with their hands up waiting for their turns on the microphone..LOL

That of course would be less enjoyable than just a live chatroom.

I'm pretty sure this topic was played with a while ago

Phill said something about it being to complicated with coding, etc...

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure!

There's a sports BB message board, similar to this. They're fans of the Jim Rome sports radio show.

Maybe the folks here can do something similar to their "quick take" board.

If they set up a chat room with voice capabiility--take it one step further and do actual Karoake thru the chatroom. On Yahoo.com theres several rooms that do just that--one person acts as the KJ and runs the rotation and people hook up a mic or karoake machine to thier audio inputs and acutally sing karaoke either one or two songs at a time. Everyone in the room is able to listen to the singers doing their thing and clap or add comments as the singers sing. It actually works pretty good. Other rooms do the same thing with recordings songwriters have made or with theme rooms like blues or jazz where people can play their favorite songs for the others. Might even want to consider setting up a webcam capability so you can see the person actually singing on screen--yahoo has all those capabilities.

oh lord! lol

How about, instead, a "shout box"... the coding is pretty easy, and you can have chat-type scrolling conversations?

Phill should know what I'm talkin' about. It's a lot of fun.

I think the chatroom (if it comes to exist) should be here... not paltalk. I for one, don't have any desire to download yet another "chat" onto my already very full computer, yet while here would love to chat with those also here.

Not exactly sure what Knightshow is suggesting... but if it would allow "chat" -vs- having to watch and wait for posts or emails.... and it was right here, I say... sure why not... if its less work for Phill...et al.

a "shout box" is a small section on the top or bottom of the page (even on the side) where you see an instant message. It's quite possible to have conversations. They are not permament messages, but it is neat to see the fun things people say to each other over a period of a few hours! LOL

One of these or both options that I am investiagting about installing.

The chatroom would only be a typing chatroom. Installing and running a "Vocal" chat is not only expensive to operate but it eats up bandwidth like a kid does candy.

Also, the implementing of one of these is also at the discretion of KS.

I have been thinking about adding a chatroom since I started working on the site. It will be a members only section but still there would have to be rules. I don't have time to moderate something of that sort. I have a heck of time keeping up with the forums ;)

We'll see what I can come up with. Give me time.

Phill

Great idea. If you are talking about what I think you are, then I've used this type of communication before while gaming online, and I bet a shout box would add a nice real-time dimension to the site. It was fun to give a shout to all within earshot (anyone logged on with shout box enabled) or whisper to someone in particular.

I like Stever's chatroom idea too :)

If you're looking to implement a chat room of sorts, have you considered using an IRC server and just implementing a java client into the site? It would probably be the least labor intensive and allow those of us that are more technically savvy to use other clients to chat with. It would also make the chat quite full featured right out of the gate.

IIRC you can require usernames and passwords to connect to an IRC server as well. Might require an additional registration step (because of a seperate mechanism to store usernames/passwords but it would allow those not interested in the chat portion of the site to not register for it. Since it's all text bandwidth usage is fairly low.

The chat room can be managed in such a way that a 'bot' can kick anyone that uses foul language or warns when used. And a kick/ban would prevent them from returning to chat for a period of time or permanently. These bots are readily available for download already scripted for the IRC client of choice with mIRC, IRCII, and BitchX being the most popular clients.

Just some thoughts...

Thank you for the info. However, I have blocked the use of those type of systems from my servers. They can cause quite a bit of 'trouble'

If we do decide to implement the chatroom feature it will run using the forum system and coordinated to work using the pre-existing settings. I am looking into that.

There are a lot of issues using those systems when those connecting to the server aren't authenticated.

It was just a thought on a way to implement a chat room.

I'm eager to see what you come up with though... I know that real time discussion on posts to the showcase would be a nice feature. As would discussions regarding equipment and discs.
