hey.. cool topic! It's very interesting to see everyone's varying tastes and what they really prefer to sing..
I love a little bit of everything, though I will say that my fav stuff to sing is Jazz!, musicals, and stuff like Earth Wind and Fire, Hall and Oates, and Chicago..
But what I enjoy singing the most and what people like to hear me sing the most are two different things.. EWF and H & O and the like aren't exactly showstopping for a female voice.. but danged if they aren't groovy to sing ooh and add Michael Mcdonald into that mix hehe
I guess for big "showoffy" type female songs, Celine and Barbara's stuff seems to sit better in my voice than whitney or mariah (tho i will attempt their stuff too.) so I get a lot of requests for those things
My mom thinks I sing country the best though it's not really my fav genre..
Some people like musicals from me the best, some opera, and some jazz
I like to mix it up big time, and explore different sounds in my voice, and I don't really think my voice sounds particularly like anyone.. I just like to sing I guess .. I'm up for just about anything
Elisha

I always try to mix it up as well, and this week will not be an exception. A woman I know at karaoke said if she coudl find a guy that could sing Tracy Byrd's Keeper of the Stars, she would marry him. I said "your on". I didn't know the song as I don't normally do the country thing, but I checked it out and I can do it so she is in for a surprise.
Of course, she won't really marry me, but it will be fun to bust on her about it.

Hmm, interesting question, but TOUGH! Ok, I don't think I sound like anyone in particular... I sound like me. But, depending on the song, I've been told I sound like Stevie Nicks, Karen Carpenter & Jewel. But, really, if I absolutely had to say who I thought I emulate well, it would have to be Margo Timmons of Cowboy Junkies (kinda obscure, I know... but you should check 'em out if you haven't already) and maybe Meredith Brooks (no, not the B---- song, I don't sing that one).

People say I sing Jim Morrison well. I also sing Maynard James Keenan pretty good.

Gilly says : Quote: I wish I had some clue, WHAT syle/artist suits my voice. AS it stands, I will sing anything, and I have no clue if it suits me or not...
I have a clue but will not say unless she says it's ok... whether or not you sound like her or your self Gilly you are a great vocalist anyway!!!
People at karaoke used to call me Jewel, till i fell off the face of the earth...

Just to throw in my two cents here,
I like to do Alan Jackson, i've been told my "Drive(For Daddy Gene)" is great, and i like the way it sounds too. Also Brooks and Dunn, Dimond Rio(Wrinkles being my favorite), and Alabama are some of my favorites to sing.

I'll bite - also a wide mix as many others have indicated:
Hal Ketchum - Past The Point Of Rescue
Jimmy Eats World - The Middle
Green Day - Basket Case
Sir-Mix-A-Lot - Baby Got Back (this white boy can RAP)
Elvis - Suspicious Minds
Matchbox Twenty - Push
===============================
If I'm at a club singing and I want to bring the house down each time - this is what I'm going to put in. The under thirty crowd goes NUTS when I do Jimmy Eat World's The Middle. If I'm in a place where people know/sing country music - then I'll pull out Hal Ketchum each and every time.

Crystal wrote: good topic.... as for me..... I have a hard time singing a lot of stuff without sounding nasal. Maybe i should invest in some vocal classes, huh? But the songs that I sing that don't make me sound like there's a clothespin on my nose all seem to be by Faith Hill and Martina McBride. Most of Amanda Marshall's songs seem to work too. I guess if it's a really strong loud song it's the best, but as soon as I hold back and try not too anger the neighbors (Im in an apartment) it all comes out my nose!! HA! Doesn't that paint a pretty picture. Your description of your voice reminds me of one of my regular singers. I was absolutely floored by her when she sang a duet from Phantom of the Opera one night! Maybe try something in the genre??

I've been on walk about too...
I somehow blew my knee out, and have had to lay low for the last three or four months.
Just got back from Vegas, (planning to sing) and was down with the flu bug.
Butt, I'm getting better, (not older) and will make the rounds again soon.
I have a lot of singing to catch up on.
KaraokeSammy has a gig just 10 blocks from the house, and it's allways fun over there.
It's good to see your face again... <kisses>
