That is not really true....

I enter in two contests heald yearly, have lost every single time, and still keep comin back for more.

The more I enter, then I suppose one day I will get lucky and win :)

Only sore losers don't come back.

But then I have had many start coming in as regulars because they enjoyed the selection, sound, hosts, club, etc...I gain more regulars than I lose.
I'm sorry, the people that don't like contests or put them down are the ones that have had negative experiences personally with them & think that's the way EVERY contest is run - or they were, as Ritisroo said, a sore loser & if they have that kind of personality, then they have no business entering into any contest.

Just because I had a bad experience with a contest doesn't mean I won't do any more. As a matter of fact, the venue where I had a terrible experience I was back at 2 weeks later (was sick the next week) and remain a regular there everytime I'm in town. My bad experience simply opened my eyes as to how hard it is to judge every category fairly or even at all. I warn people about the difficulty of running a completely fair contest, but short 'fun' contests can be fun. One venue gives away shirts and similar stuff every couple months and do 'unannounced' contests. They wait a couple rotations and give a shirt to the best, a hat to the runner up, and maybe stickers or whatever. Nothing formal and since it's unannounced there's no pressure either. They usually have 3-4 'first' places they give out... and sometimes you might get a shirt for the 'best effort' prize. You never know.

I've seen plenty of the people that were at the contest come back later on 'normal' show nights just because of the atmosphere and the crowd. Yes, we pulled some people that normally go to the venue across town, but even those people have come in occasionally because they like the setup better.

I don't think anyone here has said 'Never do a contest' or 'I'll quit before I do another contest'. I think most people here would agree that running a fair contest is a difficult proposition and some thought should go into it if you're going to advertise and offer decent prizes.

Just so you know, I'll leave a venue with an unfair rotation, bad sound, or lousy selection long before I'll drop a venue for a bad contest. One I have to put up with week after week, the other every once in a great while.

Sorry I assumed that the post was here, but it was in another topic -Some Game during a show - that someone said they would NEVER run a contest even if the bar asked them to in which they stated:

curitre wrote:
At each show, at the beginning of the 2nd rotation, we ask one multiple choice music trivia question (A, B or C). We have trivia slips specifically designed for the contest. Singers have the duration of the next song to submit their answer. We discard the slips with the wrong answer. After the one song duration, we randomly select a winner form the slips with the correct answer. The winner gets to sing an extra song immediately following their current song in the 2nd rotation. The only people allowed to particpiate are singers already established in the rotation. The "trivia winning song" is not transferrable to another singer, but we do allow the winner to invite other singers on stage to assist without without it affecting the other singer's slot. Goes over real well at out show.

As for karokae contests. We won't do them. Even if asked by the establishment.

I am so grateful and should really thank the heavens that I have never been asked to do a contest from any of my employers. After reading some of the responses it sounds like a freakin lot of work. I do have the occasional request from some individuals but I let them know I will not be going down that slippery slope anytime soon. Of course then I see their name a few weeks later announcing them as the winner in some local contest. Some people are just starving for attention it seems like. Bottom line is : Packed house, a zillion singers everybody makin bank. no contest neccasary..........peace love karaoke p.s, nobodys feelings hurt ( thats always a good thing ).

I am involved in a Nationwide competition in the UK for a well respected charity and our singers are actively encouraged to 'bribe' their way into the finals!

(That's how the charity makes its money)

No tricks, the more you raise for the charity, the better the chance of being in the final.

(2 from each heat on an audience vote, 2 from the cash)

The one time I ran a contest, I came up with what I thought was a fair, and calculated grading system-

1-20 Vocal Ability- How well the person sounded, kept on key, etc.
1-10 Stage presence- Did they read or know the words? Stand still or move?
1-5 Audience Reaction- Sleeping, or nodding their heads and clapping.

This way, even if you brought 100 people, you would only get 5 points.

I thought it worked out well, but as with any contest, someone wasn't happy with the results.

Can't please everyone........

I used to have a similar sheet except that vocals were 25, stage was 20 & audience was 5. It wasn't until someone that brought a big group in won because of the audience score & the one that didn't win came in by himself & the big group didn't applaud, so his score was lowered by a couple points & he came in second because of it.
It was after that particular contest I dropped audience response altogether.

I've only been in two contests ever. One was a weekly contest, with 1,2, 3 going to the finals at the end of the month. I won one of the weekly contests and had no bad feelings about not even placing in the finals - those were awesome singers.

The second one was a joke. I'm my own worst critic, and not a braggart, but I tore down the house with the Ray Charles version of America The Beautiful. Unfortunately, the results were based on applause only and I was there with just my girl. Afterwards, the manager of the bar said to the KJ - he won, right? (meaning me)

That's the last contest I will ever enter
