I'm new to karaoke, but set it up for a friend's party a few weeks ago and it was a blast!

It motivated me to refine my rig so its not quite so much work to set up next time. The biggie was the audio stuff, which in Version 1 was whatever old mics I had lying around feeding into an old crappy mixer that belched static whenever adjusted, which fed into an old PA with a dead channel. Fun times! And still people loved it!

So for version 2 I got a set of GTAudio wireless mics (I got the VHF one, G-380/H, oh well, but I'm hoping it'll work well enough), which will feed into my Fender Passport PA. The Fender PA still has a dead channel (1 of 4) but since the mics are only outputting a single channel that shouldn't be an issue anymore.

I've been displaying the karaoke on a giant projection screen, which is nice since people face the wall with their backs to the audience, which makes it feel more like small room karaoke, which I greatly prefer to American style "get up on stage" karaoke. There's still a monitor on the stage that folks can use if they want to go be rock stars but most people went for the projection.

For software I'm using Karafun, which works really well mostly but I have just a few complaints:

- when I first start the program I have to close the "karafun web" on the left, and when searching I have to uncheck "youtube" and "karafun web". I understand that they're trying to get me to use their services, but I wish I could just buy the program and be rid of those nags.

- ditto on the Karafun background logo that displays between tracks. Please please please let me just buy the thing and be done with it and put my own background in?

- when scrolling through my music collection, pgup/pgdn make the cursor jump around erratically. Interestingly holding down the control key while pressing pgup/pgdn mostly fixes it but then pressing the keyboard arrow makes you lose your position.

- if I'm scrolling within a specific collection (folder) I can right-click songs to edit the artist or song name, which is great. But if I'm on "My Computer" (all my collections at once) on the left or in search results, I lose the ability to edit artist and song. Why?

- it would be really nice if searching respected quotes, treating anything in quotes as a phrase. As it is it can be hard to find songs with common words in them.

But in general I like the program. It runs well even on an old XP laptop, outputs to a secondary monitor well, and is nice and simple. I don't need singer history or things like that, so I'm glad there's a non-pro choice for setups like mine.

Did Karafun used to have a paid version that would let you turn off their services?

And are there any other programs you think I should try? I don't mind paying for the right one.

The program is free, so yes uncheck Karafun and also YouTube if you wish to use it as a standalone player.

Just remove the logo from the root folder and leave it blank or put your own. it's a .png pic.

Not a karafun problem. check your mousepad or clean your mouse or just try another mouse.

Karafun is the best free full featured program. Enjoy. better than any paid version.

Give KARMA a try and post all the negative stuff on that paid version.

I know, but the issue is I have to do it every single time I run the program. Its tedious. Not a dealbreaker, but tedious. I'd much prefer just to pay for a paid version and not deal with that stuff.

Are you sure? I don't see any PNG graphics in the directory, or any other graphic that says "karafun". The only PNG graphics in the installation folder (and subfolders) are "Antialias.png", "showsync.png", and "YouTube.png", none of which are relevant. There's no other graphical (PNG or otherwise) that say karafun either.

I'm not using a mouse or mousepad at all for this, its just keyboard shortcuts. It definitely is a Karafun problem. No biggie, but its definitely a bug.

There is a file named "standby.kfn", and if I change its file extension to PNG I can open it in some image viewers (but not Photoshop, which says it can't read the format). So I'm not sure what format it could be in. But it looks like it might be the Karafun logo that's displayed between tracks.

Does anyone have any details on this file format and how to make substitutions for it?

Why don't you just purchase a professional karaoke program like CompuHost, Hoster or Karma?
