so, one night, I, a veteran KJ was chatting with a newbie KJ friend of mine who told me: "when the karaoke night's going great, you've got the crowd in the palm of your hand, everybody's happy, there's a great vibe in the room and it becomes another one of those classic, feel-good karaoke nights that feels like a epic house party, it's IMPOSSIBLE for a KJ to f--k it up...just ride the wave."
i didn't catch the rest of the conversation that night because i was stuck on this statement. is it true? i mean, barring equipment failure or a natural disaster like an earthquake during your set, is it IMPOSSIBLE for any KJ by him/herself to lose the night to was handed to them from their own doing?
and i couldn't think of a strong example to refute this, but it feels like there can't be anything this guaranteed in karaoke...right??

i guess i should add that the newbie KJ may have said "it's impossible for a 'good KJ' to lose the night" that's handed to them
the only solid example i could think of for me personally was once i went too far. the night was going great, had the crowd in the palm of my hand and i came to a decision to ride the wave or push a li'l more. i pushed. i played a certain song to get people on the dance floor to be even more flamboyant. i mentioned it here in another thread. a patron and her buddy were dancing during the dance set near the kj booth and got her foot caught up on the small tv stand for karaoke, the tv fell, she fell on top of it and her friend near her fell on top of her which knocked her out cold. night came to a halt. ambulance called. she left in a stretcher, definite concussion. i remember right before i took the night up a notch, i wondered if i should play a song that would get folks even more wild, or stay the course.
was wondering if anyone out there had thoughts/stories of how a 'good kj' could lose a night that they were fully in control of, where everyone was vibing--barring equipment failure or natural disaster.

My experience with Karma Karaoke software started as a nightmare and ended off glorious about two years ago. Just got to my gig, fired up the laptop, booted up Karma karaoke... hmmm all good till it fully loaded then crashed... no probs just restart computer and try again... by 9pm venue started filling up quick with singers... more than half hour later karma still not booting... Damn .Net popup.... no backup comp available... what to do... connected to internet downloaded FREE karaoke player from Power karaoke.... wheeeew... approx 40 singers throughout the night Power karaoke free karaoke cdg player got me through. that was the last time I ever used Karma karaoke again... excellent software but not reliable and can fail anytime, so prepare yourself and provide options.

Not impossible to eff up. I can think of several different ways. Equipment/software failure; bar fight (not necessarily KJ's fault but can still kill a good night); KJ somehow mis-speaks (a name, a slur etc); patron mis-speaks (says something highly inappropriate over the mic) and KJ doesn't catch it in time to kill the mic; etc...

Then there are Karma users like myself RLC, DJ Don, and Chris, that never have any problems...... I wonder why? Maybe it's because we have product loyalty and know every nuance about the program because we aren't wasting exhaustive amounts of time searching for nirvana.

Only issues I have with Karma are the lack of what I'd consider some very useful features. Too bad the programmer is only that and not a karaoke host and only listens to his 'yes' people.

Amen Back on topic - Not having a backup computer is a great way to ruin a good show, "Next up Ladies and Gentlemen, Murphy."

The last time I had "One" laptop at a show, it was a "welcome home" gig for an Irag vet.. Drunk spilled a beer on the keyboard, fried the Toshiba laptop, thought it was all over.. Borrowed a Dell from the host, downloaded a player, and carried on.. Songs were not hurt as they were on an external..
