For me, it depends on the night. My Thursdays are relatively new, so they aren't that busy. My Tuesdays are usually quite slow. For some reason I can't get a karaoke crowd in there. Fridays and Saturdays are my busy nights. Those two nights, sorry, the only dance music I will play is at the VERY end of the night, and that will be like two. UNLESS I have a bathroom emergency, then I will throw on a couple dance numbers so I can take care of it. OK, TMI, but I was just telling what i do. As for Thursdays, I will throw on a quick set or two during the night, unless it is busy. Tuesdays is totally played by ear. It is a weird night. Very hit or miss. So some nights there are a couple dance sets, and other nights it's all singing. As for the place the OP is talking about, I would tell them to go scratch, as soon as you find a replacement gig. Sorry, but I do my business, and Mr. Bar tender, you do yours, and neither the twain shall meet.

Good Lord!!! right back at you. I asked a question, and got an answer. And, I'm glad Alan asked the next question (I was ready to ask too), because just reading "Front of House" and "Back of House" still didn't mean anything to me. EXCUSE ME for my ignorance!!! There was no need to be insulting about my (or Alan's) lack of knowledge of such abbreviations. I'm not a businessman, so I am not up on "Business Speak."

River's is the right answer Rick is way out of bounds with his to you. We don't need a flame war here! Sorry I didn't put more detail in mine.

This looks more like over sensitivity than a "flame war".

I don't remember where "flame war" came from. Maybe the old BB's from before internet past? :?

What is YOUR problem?? Not everyone knows the terminology. Geeze, no reason to jump down their throats. I guess you LIKE trying to make people feel like idiots??

my advice: if you can, always go with your gut. do what your gut tells you to do and run your shows that way--the way you feel.

for me, probabaly because i've worked at the same venues for so friggin' long, but i tend to do whatever i feel like doing at my shows--for the most part. like if my shift ends at 2am, but i've still got another 1/2 hour of singers in line, i'm putting ALL my 1/2 hour of singers up, until the venue literally physically unplugs me. when the owners come around i might play dumb. sure, this isn't the smartest thing or wisest thing or make any kind of sense, but i do it because my gut tells me it feels right. i've gone 45 min to a full hour AFTER my gig was up (unpaid, sure) because i had that many singers and i just felt it was wrong to not let them sing. yeah, my shows tend to bend the rules and norms a lot.

maybe i read it wrong but you had a line about if someone sings a karaoke song or if a dj plays a certain song, noone else can sing or request it that night? if i read that right. i felt that way at one time, but not nowadays. i'll let different folks sing the same song back to back if they want. neither of them originally wrote the song anyways. and making folks wait 10 minutes in rotation--if there's no singers, no i don't ever do that. if i don't have singers, there's no rotation, you're going up a million times back-to-back. i don't care how the crowd, staff or owners feel. if i got no singers, and you're my only singer, you're singing, back to back, without waiting, until YOU cry uncle. i find that's the best way to get other singers to step up and break the monotony.

so if it was me at that place, i'd know things aren't going to work out with this dancers vs karaoke war, i'd just do me until they booted my lame azz out. i'd let singers sing their hearts out, i'd make the dancers wait.

i've noticed: singers you can count on for coming back. dancers you can't count on coming back. so, i put all my stock on singers. and i can't explain why, but karaoke is always the star. if i play a song, no one will dance to it. but if a karaoke singer sings that same song, the crowd will break into applause and cat calls. if it was me, i'd hustle the karaoke until the venue dropped me. i wouldn't have the singers wait.
