Singing show tunes helps fight off dementia, Alzheimer's disease: study A recent research study found that those suffering from moderate to severe dementia did particularly well singing show tunes from movies and musicals such as 'The Wizard of Oz,' 'The Sound of Music' and 'Oklahoma!' in group settings and had a marked improvement in their remembering skills versus those who simply listened during the sing-alongs.

One reason: Show tunes are usually sung with more strength of feeling - maybe empathy due to a connection - then other tunes. They are, after all, written to convey strong feeling to an audience....
That strength and emotional connection not only fortifies the ability to remember it, but singing these strong songs reduces (vents) stress, which has a HUGE effect on Alzheimer's.

Are you sure it's CRS, and not C.R.A.F.T. (Can't Remember A Frikkin' Thing)

Thanks for correcting the url chrisavis. I would be curious what showtunes are sung at people's shows here. I think the only show tune I have ever sung was If I Were a Rich Man from Fiddler on the Roof. I've also sung movie songs, like All of My Life by Stephen Bishop, but am not sure that would really be called a show tune, or would it?
