In my search for music I've noticed that beginner music packages have a variety music selections which is good. I eventually would like to have my karaoke music categorized by the year starting with 1950's to current. Would it be better to buy starter packages or buy songs individually. This is for my on personal use and not intended as business.

For home use I'd buy on an as needed/wanted basis. Unless the little packages have songs you want to actually sing, for home use you'll probably find that most of the songs will never get used.

You are probably right! I did buy some music on EBay and would like to finish the collection just for the sake of collecting This is what I have so far

42 Disc All Hits Pop Rock Oldies Country R&B SOUL MOTOWN Karaoke CDG CD Set foor around $30

Chartbuster Essentials Super cdg 2700 Songs Vols. 1 thru 6 for around $130.........I would like to find volumes 7-10 a little cheaper than the $149 per volume set that I found on EBay. Where would you suggest to download music for my needs. I checked out a few places and saw downloads $1.49 to $1.99 per download. I'm also concerned about buying from a secure site since I will be using a credit card. Thanks for your help!

Most here buy from tricerasoft.com, selectkaraoke.com (tricerasfot based), karaoke-version.com and allstarcustom.com
There are others but these are the mains that you can trust. The first two are a credit system, you purchase a bulk lot of credits & then each download is 1 credit.
Karaoke-version is a straight pay per download, they have a point system, each song you buy gives you 2 points, get to 20 points & receive a free song.
All Star you can find pre-paid cards which can actually get you as low as $.44 per song.

Don't forget Karaoke Cloud. This one's great for finding stuff that was once available on Chartbusters, as long as the licensing is still available for the song you can download it immediately. Runs $1.99 a song.

Welcome to the Forum, Bill. If you can access them, Select-A-Track, CustomBurn and ProBurn are also very good sites, with a lot of rareties and alternatives. I say IF you can access them, because some of these sites block non-EU IP addresses. Where abouts are you based?
