Slips here too. It does take getting used to - and never take stacks of slips (my rule anyway). Only because I am not going to enforce songs under the top song, so if someone brings a stack of slips up, and someone else puts a song in that might be two or three slips down, the person just handing it in will be the one singing it tonight - not the person that handed me a stack. Sing one Bring one!

As a kiosk user, I just don't worry about slips or rotation because the machine does it for me. However, the OP got me thinking because folks have accused me of skipping them in rotation. This usually happens when the people don't understand the rotation system I use. In the sing-one-bring-one method that I use if you don't have a song request in, then you're not in the rotation if you've sung before or not. Maybe that's what's going on.

For me the likelihood of getting it not just "right", but perfectly executed as per their wishes, is with a song slip. It can be used to solve disputes by being proof of what they requested. Hearing someone's request accurately, in a loud setting, can be a challenge as well.
Multi tasking as Brian pointed out is impossible to do perfectly every time too! There are no sure fire, 100% carved in granite, swear on a Bible methods, but I will put my money on a host taking requests using a song slip is going to get it right more than by verbal. They also serve the purpose of getting additional information such as email, key changes, manufacturer preferences, etc.
If the KJ rack/rig is near the singer it can be very distracting to the singer during their 4 minutes of "owning" the stage. Let's hear it for SONG SLIPS Song slips

Ditto here! ‘Bring one when you sing one’. If you don’t turn in a song slip at the start of the next rotation I would assume (hate the connotation on that word (@$%!)+u+me ) assume that you don’t want to sing anymore, or had left the building. I always get the - hey you skipped me line, my reply - I cannot play your song if you don’t have a song in. I know, it’s a lot easier to approach them & I ask what they’re singing next, but it became so burdensome almost everyone started not submitting; just waiting for me to go to their table so they can hand it to, thus resulted in wasted valuable time. Try that on 30 singer nights, coupled with the multi-task I described earlier. Very seldom happens anymore tho’. They learned fast, now I always get one when they come up to the stage. Tough love, less stress for me + a streamlined rotation management.

With Karma I load as many slips as they give me at one time. I don't care if it's 1 or 4. The other night, Halloween Eve, I had 29 singers and half way through the first rotation I had the second rotation completely filled with songs. It took a little work to get it all entered, but the rest of the night was a breeze. The thing that works best for is when I see someone enter the room I add them to the rotation before they even give me a song slip. If they don't want to sing right away I just move them down the line. No one can argue about who got there first that way.

Karma has an option to display only singers who have songs in the queue. I start the night showing everyone no matter what. Then as the night gets busier, I drop the folks that don't give me songs from the display and just periodically ask singers to come give me their songs.

Again, if it's a regular, i'll automatically throw something in their spot from their history if they forget to give me something else. If I don't know you or you have no song history, then I may ask if you were going to to sing again if it's not too busy and I can get out to you, otherwise, it is up to you to get your next song up to me.

Key word: If it's not too busy! Again, not if there are 30+ singers in the house!
