I have some acquaintances who are songwriters, DJs, and bandmembers. They are great at all three, and also happen to be some of the nicest people that I've ever met.

One of their band/DJ venues wanted them to run karaoke as well. Well, I went to the show to see how they did.

Great sound, terrific, energy filled hosting.

Only two ( very serious) problems:

1) They have about 1500 songs. That's fine, as we all know it's that "top 300" that get most used. The problem is they don't have them. They probably have all the last 2 years' productions, plus about 1/3 Latin music ( I believe this in deference to the girlfriend of the main host), and some off-beat stuff. Much of the popular music that the DO have are fairly horrible versions.

2) The books. While they do list the mfrs. ( good move) they are completely unorganized. Looking under "artist", the listing could be last name, or first name, or the song title. It takes forever just to determine that the DON'T have a song- or that they might, but they forgot to list it.

Both problems can be cleared up fairly easily and cheaply, and with them solved I truly think they would have a terrific and popular show.

My problem is that I would like to help them, but don't know how to do so without sounding like an egotistical jerk.

At an impasse.....

You could probably approach them and ask about their song book. Then you could suggest they redo the books by listing the artists one way or the other to make it more uniformed and easier to find things. It's a simple suggestion, and it's not stepping over a line where it might be construed that you're telling them how to run their show. I wouldn't push your luck too much beyond that.

Bring in a copy of your own book. Show them what a complete, well organized library looks like.

It's all in the phrasing. "Have you considered..." "Something that has always worked for me is..." "Just curious--why did you decide to..." etc.
