I have done that as well before. Sometimes it is warranted if the scores on 1 singer looks unusually high or low.

One contest - which I was trying something new, I actually had each contestant be the judge of the others. Obviously not for themselves. It worked out fine, and there was actually little complaints at the results.

While I won't do contests, if I did, Lon's method above is by far the best and most innovative that I've ever seen. Kind of like the kids dividing the cake formula.

There would no cause for complaint ( which doesn't mean they wouldn't whine anyway, but...).

 Nice work, Lon!

There's another thread somewhere on these forums where I outlined a lot of my reasons for being hesitant to do contests; but this was based on my experience with long-term, multi-week contests.

I personally have never done a single-night contest. However, there's a bar around here that awards a small trophy and a discounted tab to the MVP of the night, so it's something of a single-night contest every week. They do very well, so it seems to me that a single-night contest brings out hopefuls without baiting and subsequently pissing off divas/regulars/diva regulars.

8) I don't know if this helps or hurts but here goes. I don't do contests because I feel most singers including myself don't have a true view of their own abilities or lack there of. So instead of a real contest I thought sort of a anti contest. Sort of like the Do Da parade in Hollywood. What I call kamikaze karaoke contest. I don't judge the contest I only EMCee and run the machine. You take a jar and place 100 songs in it randomly selected, the contestant then picks a song out and sings it. That way no ringers will have an advantage. It can be done in one night. Along with the contest of course the bar runs a special on kamikaze shooters and jello shooters for a buck a piece, the more everyone drinks the better everyone sounds. Instead of big prizes you give out small or gag gifts, it's all done for fun with no drama. I've done this a few times, everyone had a good time and no hard feelings. Just an idea.

Just thought I'd ad my 2 cents. I ran into an older Karaoke host who explained to me that the best way he found to run a contest was to allow the contestants to do the judging. Thus, All contestant have to be there at the beginning of the contest NO Late comers. Most Karaoke singers are relatively honest. Or at least consistent in their judging. How did it work. Only One complaint from a friend of mine who does a lot of Contests. He was made because they judged too heavily on Singing ability and not enough on dress up and putting on a show.

Kinda like this idea. All contestants vote as long they’re not allowed to vote for themselves. If a tie should occur one unbiased judge will vote to break the tie. Not completely happy with the result? No one to blame but themselves.

Problem with the contestants doing the judging is that it's still possible to stack the deck. I've seen cases where the Diva brings all their friends and they all enter the contest and then they all vote for the Diva. That alone cured me of entering contests and it wasn't even that big of a contest.

Best advice I could give is that if they insist on having a contest, hold it on a night that normally doesn't have karaoke. That way you don't P.O. your regular singers by cutting into their singing time and hopefully the bar make a couple of extra bucks on what would normally be a slower night. You could even have a little open karaoke before and/or after the contest for anyone who wants to sing.

Actually Brian. The way we do it is everyone gives themselves 100 points. I guess if they really want to they can score themselves. LOL But that would definately hurt them more than help. We've never seen a tie. 100 point scale X amount for singing ability, x amount for appearance, X amount Stage presence etc. It'd be a fluke to have a tie.
w0 singers with 20 different scores. I'm sure it could happen But I think it'd be rare.

My first contest out of the way. I steered completely clear of the judging. First prize was a keg of beer, or should I say a free keg party for the winner only to be used on non karaoke nights.

There were 4 rounds. There were 6 singers. There was no entry fee. All I did was announce the singers, mix for the singers and announce the winner. It was a fun time, the crowd was pretty pumped and out of the 6, half were darn good, 2 were amazing and 1 who really had no chance at all from the get go.

I caught a lot of flack from one of the singers (I would have rated him 5th) because I didn't have two of the songs he wanted to sing. After about the 6th time he whined about it, I told him my name was KingBing not Long John.

I think the judges picked the wrong winner, but as I said, two were amazing. After the contest was over, I looked up each singer and congratulated them. The one I thought should have won was with a guy who was,,,, you guessed it, pissed off because the girl he was standing by didn't win. He wanted to know who the judges were, I told him I didn't know, the bar took care of all that.

That was the only negative of the night, overall it went over good and I think they could want to bump up the prize and actually charge an entry fee.

I have judges sitting at their own table most times. Also judges sheets are always available for contestants to review their scores. No reason to keep them from them.
