Very, VERY few manufacturers use the original music. The Motown series is one. I know the Original Footage discs used the original videos but not sure about the music. I did see 1 disc at WalMart that was the original music that wasn't either of the above mentioned companies - but I can't remember what company it was right now & it was older pop/rock from the late 60's early 70's. 98% of the companies out there are using "cover" bands or sequencers & midi synths for the cheesier companies (SGB is one) for the music.
As far as taking out the vocals of regular discs, it can be done but how well it gets done is SOLELY dependant on how the original disc was recorded. most karaoke machines have a vocal canceller. One of the biggest drawbacks in doing this is you are almost always going to lose some drums & bass (sometimes more than others), sometimes guitars as well leaving an echoey background of what should be.

THANKS!
The reason I ask, is that I am looking for Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson's NEWEST cds in karaoke versions, I love singing to their CDs while I'm driving, but would like to hear what my voice sounds like without theirs' behind it. Do you happen to know if there are karaoke versions of these cds? (not that you look like somone who would know, but just thought I'de ask....)

Depends on the songs you want. You can usually be assured 99% of the time that every song on any cd will never be released for karaoke, but the songs released on the radio will generally become available within a couple months of release - sometimes before radio release.
Which songs in particular are you looking for?
BTW never judge a book by it's cover I listen to everything from oldies, classic rock - todays alternative, pop, r & b, rap, country & pretty much everything in between

Motown is by "Singing Machine", but it's OLDer stuff... i.e. Motown !
I've heard of some labels that try to do "new songs" by the original artist, but have yet to have found one. Most of us just satisfy ourselves with the Pop Hits Monthly, Top Hits Monthly, Star Discs, Sound Choice, Chartbuster, Easy Karaoke, Sing To The World, Music Maestro, Top Tunes, and others when it comes to their NEWEST releases to sing to the stuff that you're wanting.
If you give us some song examples, we might be able to help you find what you're looking for. Give it at least a month or so from the time a song hits before it's "karaokeized"! In the nineties, the karaoke manufacturers used to be ahead of the game... but not nowadays!

Wal mart should have some of Britney's Older stuff on CD's.....like Oops I did it Again, Stronger, Hit Me Baby One More Time, Overprotected.
You can check it out on their website to see what they have.
Also, I know that every song that I have ever wanted from Britney is in karaoke version. I am not sure if you can get just a "Britney" disk though. You would have to do a search.
Jessica Simpson, all her popular ones, should also be out in Karaoke. I think you can find some of hers in Walmart too.
If you really want them all on one disk, I believe there are a lot of custom karaoke sites that will make them for you. PM me for an address. $5.00/song is what they charge.
Walmart discs (Up here in Canada) usually go for around $10.00 to $15.00 per disc, and I actually think they are pretty good

Thanks guys, (and sorry about the "judging a book by it's cover" thing, , I listen to EVERYTHING, also when people ask "what kind" of music I like to listen to my answer is usually "Any song that sounds good to me & I enjoy listening to ".)
Well the particular songs I'm looking for are:
from Britney Spears' latest cd "In The Zone" the songs:
"Toxic" and "Everythime"
also from Jessica Sipmpson's latest cd "In This Skin" the songs:
"Sweetest Sin", "With You", "I Have Loved You", and "In This Skin"
Also, can you "download" karaoke songs??? (like burn them onto a cd???)
Thanks for all the help!

Toxic & Everytime are readily available from most of the good manufacturers ie Sound Choice, Pop Hits Monthly, Top Hits Monthly and man others.
Sweetest Sin & With You are available, the other Simpson songs are not at this time. Pocket Songs has an all Jessica Simpson disc with both of these songs plus about 8 others. Although they aren't my most favorite brand - grant it they are ok, it may work for you.
You can buy custom discs from various manufacturers & some karaoke outlets. I also heard Top Hits Monthly is beginning to start the pay per download program, we're hoping all the others jump on this bandwagon as well.

If you get Sweetest Sin, I can tell you already the THP (I will have to double check at home) is an impossible version to sing to.
Lots of Sweetest Sin requires singing a line, and then singing a line (ie. your lips upon my lips, can you imagine this)
It is really hard to sing to....So, I would advise not to go with that version!
I will double check the exact CD I have when I get home.
