I have also aquired melted karaoke disks that way.

Seriously folks, one can largely plan ahead on what "current" music they want to play for a DJ set.

That is only about 15 or so songs an hour, so to do 5 four hour shows with no repeats that is only 300 songs....

Few DJs I know go so long without repeats.

As for older songs, any DJ that cares enough about music to be a DJ should have accumulated a couple thousand songs over the years.

Now a "pro" DJ may be expected to have a few thousand songs ready to go in case of requests, but I see no reason that they should have to spend a whole lot less than a KJ who often has to spend well over $1 a song.

My songs are a mix of CDs from stores, mail order, and a few downloads from itunes and similar sites. If I could do it over, I probably would have chosen somewhere besides itunes because of the format issues.

I have started using Walmart's online MP3 downloads for most of my stuff. At least this way I get a clean version of the song that I don't have to worry about playing while I'm doing a wedding...

You must know some crappy DJs.

Rule #1 in the DJ handbook is NO REPEATS. I have done 8 hour DJ shows without repeats. Damn good ones too.

I typically go into a wedding or party DJ gig with a playlist of about 200 songs as the gameplan of what I intend on playing, but I do have a total of about 5500 songs in my library.

I do as much or more work before the gig preparing my playlist than I actually do at the gig. The order I play from that playlist varies depending on the crowd dynamics, but it is only once in a blue moon that I stray from that initial playlist.

Even my karaoke filler currently consists of only about 130 songs. Put those in a different order every night along with the variance of karaoke songs, and each night is completely different.

I don't do repeats -- thought chicken dance does get repeats only because the crowd insists! I have hundreds of hours of music on each of three laptops and manage to go hours without repeats. I also spend MORE TIME before an event creating playlists as I do at the event. Part of a successful music show.

Same here. I DJ car shows and I never do repeats (except for the odd request). Car shows are all day events and it's not hard to have no repeats. In fact, I can do all car related songs without ever repeating.

I don't do repeats. No excuse for that... except maybe the "Cupid shuffle" which is by request.

Although I do put aside 30 or 40 songs that I THINK I will play, in the end, it's about reading the crowd and taking requests.
I had a very successful party Saturday. No karaoke (was supposed to be) just DJ. It was the funnest party I ever did. I have about 7000 songs in my library and there were still 4 or 5 requests that I could not play. None from the current top 40 list as I had everything up to date from that perspective. You just never know what people will request other than the obvious 15 or 20 all time popular dance songs.
