I have 2 questions reguarding digital key changers.
1) Do most KJ's use them? I know that most cdg players and karaoke mixers have built in key changers, but what if I want to use a Sony DVD changer and a Leader CD+G decoder. Should I buy an external key changer? Or, should I just buy a Karaoke CDG player instead of the changer? And who makes a good quality key changer?
2) Do the key changers automatically adujust the pitch of the music, or do you have to do it manually.
I'm planing on starting a karaoke business. I have a $4000 limit. Here is my plan.
Sony CDPCX355 300 disc changer
Leader CDG Decoder
Peavey pv-1500 amp
Mackie DFX-6 Mixer
dbx 266xl compressor - I don't know if I really need this.
Some type of Key Changer - If I need it.
Shure PG-58 microphones
JBL or Peavey speakers.
DK Millenium - This looks like a good startup set.
I decided on this equipment after reading many of the topics hear and many electronics reviews. Any input would on this setup would be appreciated.

Since this is going to be a business, you'd probably be better off just getting a karaoke player with a built in changer. The good brands are designed to withstand the rigors of commercial use. You really don't want to use a "jukebox" type cd changer for mobile use. You can scratch or even break discs in transit. Look at the JVC/RSQ triple tray player. If you really want the DVD capability, the RSQ505. These will save you a little in your budget & work much better in the long run.
You will need a key changer since some singers will request that the song be higher or lower to match their voice. These do not adjust the speed of the music, it does it all digitally. The changers built into the machines are generally a little better than the external units.
A compressor is good to have to keep levels balanced on your singers. It would hook into your mixer via the insert jacks on the vocal channels.
