There's never any need to share with your employer that "It's not about the money". As a matter of fact that's never a good idea to divulge.  Now,  tell your current boss it IS about the money, and take the new gig that pays much more.. Simple !   Tell him you don't wish to leave but you have a chance at making 3X more.. ANY BUSINESS person will understand that !   It wouldn't be reasonable to turn down a more exciting venue that offers you that much more pay.  Common sense says if you want it,  GO for it !   Turn this around,  if it's not about the money for you,  what do you have to lose by taking advantage of a chance at an exciting new venue ?  Tell the current employer, if there's not scheduling conflict you'd be happy to help him still.. He'll appreciate you that much more.  Your boss is a business person to.. In business it's about money..

I talked with the owner at my current gig last night and she was very willing to up her ante.  I won't make as much as the other gig was offering, but I retain the conveniences that I've grown accustomed to at the current venue, mainly my established crowd and not having to pack my equipment back and forth.

Boy it would be nice to have a owner that understands this concept.  We are just getting a good thing going after me preaching consistancy and working to bring people in.  The overwhelming majority of the crowd that is coming into the place is there for one reason, they would NEVER come to this place if I or other "Good" entertainment was not there.  He wants to pick and choose the weekends, that will generally draw in a big crowd and just ride out the rest.  ***stupid***, but hey...it's not my place.  The writing is on the wall...time to go hunting for a different gig (after NYE)....:)
