Being a KJ who also DJ's I am constantly getting requests from family members to
provide some musical entertainment at family gatherings.  For the larger affairs I have no problems bringing my entire set up and rock the place singing and playing music if needed.   But many of these requests are for smaller intimate type settings where some background music is required were a STEREO or "boom box" may suffice.   My question is if regular LAPTOP external Speakers would be up for this type of job???  I would love to be able to bring a 8" powered speaker/s that could hook directly to my laptop.  Wouldn't need much power.

any suggestions?    Would a decent set of  powered laptop speakers do the job?
or Would I need to go with a more pro-audio powered speaker system ?

WOuldn't use laptop speakers, but a decent powered speaker should suffice fine.  If you can get one with a built in mixer on the back would be even better.  Carvin actually makes a decent one.

Has a built in 4 channel mixer & also built in digital effects for vocal (the 400D model).  100 watts & battery operational as well!

I carry a cheesy little rig in my trunk (I have a big trunk).

* Behringer PMH518M mixer (5 mic channels, 180 w mono)
* Behringer XM8500 mic
* 2 Kustom 10" speakers

Total cost (much bought on sale): $230

Sounds pretty decent, has effects, plenty of power to rock even a very big living room or basement. Sometimes I toss in a Zebra case with a wireless mic. I always have my laptop with appropriate cables, and it has my karaoke library on it.

I can have an impromptu karaoke party at any time!
