It's no longer the second highest in the world Milo (At least I don't think it is).  There's a channel bridge that's now higher.. It's the second highest in the country however, and the highest steel arch span in the world I believe (unless the bridge in S Africa is higher)..

I believe the sign as you cross now reads "The Western Hemisphere's Longest Steel Arch Bridge"

(In my opinion, there are so many qualifications on that statement that it becomes kind of silly - but it's still an impressive bridge)

There have been multiple fatalities during Bridge Day with the BASE jumping (two of which I've witnessed... I haven't gone back since). As far as I know, they still allow it at the NRGB, but then I haven't been to Bridge Day in years.

I believe the ONLY factual statistic that New River Transit is willing to stake claim at is Second highest auto deck over water in the US and longest passenger traveled Single arch bridge..  I think it IS the third highest deck over water in the world, yet I suppose statistically this can't be proven given certain other countries geography.  The Arch clearance is 870+   I also believe that the New River Gorge bridge IS the highest single arch steel span over water in the world in addition to the longest, however for some reason it's tough to find such a claim in structural or civil engineering stats.   The Millau bridge deck is only slightly higher than New River at it's highest clearance point over high water levels, but it's a MUCH larger bridge and a very different structure.. The Royal gorge bridge although not technically a traffic route used by motorists,  claims highest deck clearance over water in the world, yet in terms of bridge towers (which many use to measure bridge height, it stakes no claims).. Just deck clearance.  I don't believe there are other passenger decks anywhere quite as high as these bridges I've mentioned
