What if you did a karaoke bar where you had karaoke in an open area for everyone and then the option to rent private rooms on the side by the half hour or more.  :D

Yep I want to rent that room over there for about an hour for me & my date I just met can go 'SING'  :dancin:
That's another problem i've heard about the private box rooms.

Yikes ! Don't put any furniture in that room for sure. I'd say windows without curtains too, but how private is that. I think that's a great point by Lon.

Maybe, someone could sell the idea of doing a non- alcoholic show in a mall to bring more people in to shop.

The overhead in a mall is exorbitant though.

Also,  would an activity such as Karaoke entice people to shop ?  Or would it create Mall-rats, and attract those that "Hang around" like arcade games often did.. This might not be something most malls WOULD want assuming a tenant can afford a mall setting.  Problem is around here Malls are triple-net lease too. Not for many businesses, just the ones that can really pull in bucks

This is the great thing about it! The karaoke host does not have to pay for space in the mall. The mall has a budget for promotions and entertainment. The mall has several permanent stages set up down the corridors of the mall. People are booked to perform or do karaoke on these stages. Most of the stages are small and there are not a lot of seats, but the stage where the karaoke show is done seats around 150 people right out in the middle of the mall where people pass by while shopping. The karaoke show starts at 6:30 pm and runs till the mall closes. They have a curfew on the kids. Any kid under 17 without a parent has to leave the mall unless they are over in the area where the movie theaters are located. Do people actually shop? Yes! They listen a while and shop a while. There is a crowd of people who always show up just to listen and meet up with friends to visit.  The mall will even provide a sound system if you dont have one. Of course they do not have a karaoke player, the kj must provide that. My friend on the other hand, carries her own system in and does her show.  She has an excellent sound system that most performers would love to sing over so anyone singing at the karaoke show is getting to use top quality equipment. Not only that, because no one is staggering up to a mic loaded on booze, they are family people who just love to sing, she is able to use good mics and not worry about someone doing something dumb and breaking equipment.  To me, she has the ultimate karaoke job!  I said earlier that this is her only job, but from time to time the local schools hire her to do karaoke on their campuses. Singing karaoke is a great way to teach reading as well as help those who have a tough time reading.  There are the occassional weddings etc. too that come her way. The mall job, however, is an excellent way to do karaoke.   This show has proved to be an incredible opportunity for families to get together and enjoy entertainment and the only cost to them is their time to show up and sing.  No tips are given, there is no charge to sing. The mall pays the kj a salary for doing the show, provides sound equipment if needed, provides a stage, chairs for the audience, and provides, rent free, mall space to do the show. So far, and this has been going on for about 9 years, the mall has not suffered and people still enjoy the show. It is growing every week! --Mike

I wonder how that would go over in this stuffy area of New England.  It's ashame too..  People in this area I think move here to escape having to contend with relaxation and pleasurable stuff :(

If you don't have alcohol, you better have some great food and wide variety of drinks to serve to build a reputation as such. Having some peanuts and cola just won't cut it. Even then, it may not be enough.

May I ask how did you know those businesses didnt make $$? Because my business model will be similar!! Thanks

I have friends in the similar business and they have told me that they make money not on venue but on food and drink. For example, I have friend who used to own a bar, they would have a band on weekend and charge to get in. They never made enough from the admission fee but they made up for it by selling more alcohol. It's just the way it is around here, in my opinion.

Let's think about it. If you charge $50 per room for the night and have 10 rooms, your income for the night would be at most $500, if you fill them all every night. I have been to these places and we paid 3x or 4x on food and drink. You won't fill them up every night. Weekends tend to be better but on weekdays, you will be lucky to fill 1-2 rooms. If you don't have extra income from food and drink, I don't think your business would be viable.

12 minutes to inflate the air mattress
 2 minutes to "sing"

How much do these Karaoke places charge to rent a female backup vocalist and small room for 15 minutes of singing ?

Who needs furniture in THAT room ?   Karaoke does stand a chance in CT after-all !
Supply the rooms as well as the female accompaniment and you can duet in any of my ten rooms !!!

That mall show sounds like a great idea, I should propose it to some malls around here.

I think you should. As a matter of a fact. Our mall, even though it is not in Nashville, is called Music City Mall.   I know it really works as a great promotion for the mall.  We had our big Permian Basin Fair and Expo going on this week, and the ventrilloquist that won America's Got Talent, was there for several shows through the week. The mall was still packed with people who chose to attend our shows instead of the shows at the fair. That says a lot about the loyalty of our fans and the type of people we are dealing with. You should try to get something going in malls around your area.--Mike

Jumping in here, because I have opened and run a karaoke business. Not like what you are talking about, but opening any business has its ups and downs. Unlike most in here who are going to be negative and tell you things based on here say. I will say this, you need to do your homework. Asking in here is ok, but it also invites opinions that may not be what you need.

You will have to find your niche in the market place.

You can profit without booze, but you need to think how your going to market your place versus others in your area.

If getting rid of one revenue stream, replace with another.

You may want to market your place as family friendly, ( no booze) sell sodas, snacks, maybe some food, ( basic stuff). Maybe do a kids birthday package.  Maybe sell some basic karaoke music and equipment.

Know your market- ask people in the area what they think.

One thing everyone here has right..............it will take a couple of years to see a return. Unless you are lucky and find a very profitable niche.

Good luck!!
and do your homework!!!!!!!!!!
