I'm currently using a Yamaha EMX312 powered mixer and Yamaha 15" mains. I've been using a set of EV 12's  for monitors. The 312 has an output on the front for a powered monitor. I may get one and use the 2 EV's as mains, for a total of 4 mains. If I have 12 ga 50' cables going to the Yamaha 15's, is it safe to use 14 ga 25 ' cables to get from the Yamaha's to the added EV's? Or do I need to make up some 12 ga cables to jump from the 15's to the 12's?

In a word Yes, but do you need a 50 foot cable? are you really running your speakers 100 foot apart?

Not "as the crow flys"...but the room where I keep my equipment most of the time, required long cables to route around to the speaker locations. I bought 100' of 12 ga and just cut in half and made 2 cables. Figured they would come in handy at some point in time. And they have. My question is, since my primary cables to the mains are 12 ga, do the secondary cables from speaker to speaker need to be 12 ga as well? If not, I'll use two 25' 14 ga. cables I have on hand.

As far as cabling, more than likely you won't run into much if any problems doing that.  You could possibly run into some phase cancellation between the 2 different types of speakers.  If possible, run 1 channel to 1 set of same speakers (Yamaha 115) & the other channel to the other same set (EV).  I would set the Yamaha up for the main up front & Put the EV in the back to round out the sound.  
Now on the flipside i'm not sure if you can set up that system to actually work WITH a powered monitor & all 4 speakers.  One set of speakers (assuming they are 8 ohms each) will drop the load to 4 ohms per channel in Main L/R mode - which is acceptable.  If you set it up for Main/Monitor mode, you can still put 1 set per channel, except the monitor output will send whatever is plugged into those speaker output the monitor signal - on top of the Monitor line out to the external powered monitor.   If you don't have it in the main/monitor mode, then you won't have monitor control separately.  You can't plug all 4 speakers to the main channel (one channel) by itself as it will drop to a 2 ohm load which the amp won't be able to take.

Ok, I was just curious, when you said you was having to make a longer cable run to get from point A to point B.  I was thinking you might be using a splitter so you could get away with just running one NL4 from the mixer to close to the speaker then breaking it out to speaker A and B. I'm pretty sure the EMX 312 has Speakons available too. That 312 is a pretty slick mixer isn't it, I almost bought one once, I was going to use it to make a monitor split on stage.

It does have Speakons on it. It seems to be a good little unit. I just haven't learned much on how to adjust it yet. I'm lazy!!
