I have to laugh about the bad singers choosing long songs. Last week one of th 'subpar' singers handed me a slip with "Dream On" and "Patience". Even though we were doing 2, I told him that was too long and broke him up. He understood, but I was worried....

Was at another show that does the 2fers, and a guy got up and did "Kashmir" and "War Pigs" in the same set.....but they both sounded like Bob Goldwaith

I don't llke 2 songs. I don't know what it is, but the bad singers often pick the longest songs. I went to one show that had three awesomely bad singers each sing two 5-7 minute songs each.

Boy ain't that the truth.  I have one guy that sings terribly, but does nothing but the long songs ie. American Pie, Shout - Tears For Fears (DK version), I'd Do Anything for Love, etc...

You know, I never noticed until now that all of Meat Loaf's songs are long....

Actually, Two Out Of Three... is relatively short.  Everything else Meat Loaf did is like an operetta.

Has anyone a response for DBK regarding my suggestion that he consider running one speaker as the main and turning down or not even plugging in the second?

          1)    I for one, am one of thoes KJ that dosen't use monitor speakers.  But I do setup so that the singer can hear the MAINS.

IMHO, monitors for karaoke are OVER KILL

          2)       As for F/X, it has been my experince that most KJs way over do it.  A F/X should be adjusted so you BARELY notice it.  I would rather have NO F/X rather than TOO MUCH!

           1)  I agree wholeheartedly.  If the mains are set up properly, thare is absolutely no need for a monitor.

           2)   That's a bit stickier. I set up sound and effects for each singer and song.  Too much is awful, but some singers need more help than others.....

That statement couldn't be any more wrong. Go ask ANY sound engineer and they will tell you that if the mains are set up properly, then you absolutely HAVE to have a monitor!!

I was in a band for two years, was an amateur sound engineer for another band for about a year, and have been a KJ for 2.5 years. But don't take my word for it...go ask a certified sound expert (a.k.a. engineer). And I don't mean the dumba**es down at Guitar Center/Sam Ash!!

Gotta agree with the need for properly set up mains AND monitor!  If the mains are put behind the singer so that the singer can hear themselves, then you're looking for feedback!  Most of the sound is projected forward from the speaker, so if the mains are beside the singer or turned slightly to allow the singer to hear them better, they will have to be turned up too much!  If the speakers are out front they can bet set just to the correct mix, and a monitor can be used for the singer, with the mic channel control for the monitor can be adjusted so that the singer can hear above the backing!  Far too often I have been to a karaoke gig with no monitor and the backing drowns the vocals (and timing cues) to the singer's ear...
