The Tacoma Narrows bridge toppled I thought because at that time architectural and civil engineering wasn't familiar with the phenomenon of "resonance", or deck vibrations weakening th structure from torsional twisting.. I thought that was caused by swaying that later *I think* was resolved by civil and architectural engineers learning that placing very tight horizontal cable on the deck foundation along with the vertical cable helps reduce bridge vibration leading to dangerous structure damaging swaying.  I thought it was torsional twisting from vibration and flutter, NOT an actual storm that brought the bridge down during a wind.  I didn't know it was an actual storm that finally brought the bridge down in the 30's.   I've read about this stuff.  Fascinated in civil and architectural engineering,  even though I suck at this stuff...

Which storm was it that toppled the Tacoma Narrows Bridge in that famous footage we always see- you know of the guy walking away from his car just as the bridge blows down?

That wasn't even really a storm, that was just wind (less than 40-45 mph) - like Stephan stated, that was all due to architecture.  Little known fact, the guy walking from that car was trying to get his dog out - he didn't!

Here is a brief history for those who may not know:

I'm trying to view the footage of the event.  Anyone know anything about the following file format ogg/Theora  ?

Footage of the Tacoma Narrows bridge wobbling and eventually, collapsing. (19.1 MB, ogg/Theora format).

Last night they showed some footage of a plane trying to land in high winds. He had to try 2 times. I didn't catch which part of the United States it was in. It was a large plane full of people. It was being tossed back and forth like a toy. Very scary.

It was even shown in our TV, that was a near-miss.

That was at the Seattle Tacoma Airport in Washinton.....It's pretty bad there and I had put my 13 yr old on a plane to go there today...His dad has no power and they are telling him it may be up to a week before he has power back on.. He does have a generator at his house so It's not so bad for him...

My older son who is 21 has no power either..He and his wife went to a motel six for a few days until the power comes back on....

I hope you and your family are doing ok Lonman...Geez, first the flooding and then the snow storm and now no power..Holy cow..What will be next???
