Yes, but others can elaborate more.

Micro Studio from MTU will play from your cd drive (if CGD capable) BUT, Microstudio would not be a program I would want to try and use to host a show if that is your intent.
If you are hosting a show and intend to use CDG's, then I would just stick with a CDG player and not mess with a computer.

winamp ALSO has a plugin that will let you play from the cdrom, assuming it can read the subcode. not free, though!

EElvis, the older version of MS 2.316 will play without importing. I wasn't happy with the new version. Still using the old.

Yep, you're right. I am however using the new version. It is so much more powerful than the older one. It will work with almost all cd/dvd drives. It will burn almost any format without conversion. (.kma, .wma, cg+g, .bin, .wav..... etc.)
It makes it easier if I am using hoster to practice at home and decide to go out singing, I can burn from the hard drive rather than looking up the disk, ripping it, then burning it.
One real time saver.

Thanks Knightshow. After a little research I think he is referring to the CDG Disk Player Plugin for Winamp. It appears that the cost to download that is 29.95. That seems reasonable to me. Would anyone disagree that it's worth a try?

depends on your useage, Eric.
I PERSONALLY wouldn't do it, but that's me. I play off the hard drives! I don't have a cdrom in my show computer, as I play the customer discs on a backup player to show that I'm not even capable of stealing tracks!
For home use, I just rip the disc to a temp folder!

I used to use this and worked flawless. Unfortunately, with the last version update, it now quits on me everytime I try to start up the program. I tried to reinstall several times and I still have problems. Using XP and it wasn't a problem in the past. Any thoughts?

I'm sorry, but I'm not understanding the answer(s) I've been given. Here's more data. I am a hobbyist in the process of transferring disks to my laptop's hard drive. Meanwhile, I often take my laptop and karaoke machine to family get togethers, for example. I'd would like to be able to leave the karaoke machine behind and play the disks off an external cd-rom drive.

If you transfer everything to your hard drive, you won't need to play the discs at all - unless the people at the get togethers bring in their own discs.

Of course. But I'm far from transferring all my discs or I wouldn't be asking about playing them directly from a cd rom. So, again, I'm not sure what you folks are recommending

Since I'm always getting new disks, I'm not sure when, if ever, being able to play disks on my computer would become unnecessary.
Powerkarake recommended Power CD+G Player Pro will play directly from CD+G disk. Does anyone else have experience with this product. Does anyone know its cost?

Power CD+G Player Pro costs $39 USD.
You may want to try it out before buying it.

Power K, do you have a list of model numbers of program compatible readers?

Power CD+G Player Pro works with about 90% of the drives. We do not have the drive list as it was impossible for us to test them all, but you may download the trial version and see if it works on your device. Usually the problems are experienced with laptop drives.

Thanks mucho lots. It took less than 30 minutes for me to download the trial offer of the Powerkaraoke CDG player, and to test it out. Not only does it do what I wanted (end my need to carry my Karaoke machine around to parties), the software comes with a key changer which my cheap Singing Machine lacks. What a pleasant surprise.
One warning, it took me over 1/2 to pay for the product, the site is very confusing in that regard. A word of advice about paying, go directly to the hot link to "PayPal"
Again, thanks.
