Since I had used this site to determine how I should go about setting up a system for home use only, and no one has recommended it, I thought I'd share what I finally purchased.  A little background.. I had purchased a CAVS 203G and 2 Shure SM58 mics to go with my SONY home receiver and Boston Acoustics tower speakers.  As I used it a few times, I noticed I was getting more distortion than I cared for.  Many users say to skip the home equipment and go to a small pa system AND THEY ARE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT.  I bought the Yamaha Stagepas300 for $525 at guitar center. What a difference. If your looking to set up a home system, go listen to these.  Compared 'em head to head against Fender Passport 250 and these are much better.  Even hooked up TV,DVD player and an old keyboard to the powered mixer.  Great buy for under $600.  I'm suprised none of the expert posters here had recommended these.  Just my humble opinion from a newbie

We play with bigger toys.   We are not that familiar with those size speakers.

Don't listen to the mutt.  For home use, that system should work out fine - won't put out alot of bass, but that's all subjective to how much you want/need.  You can always add a powered sub later if you feel you need more bass.  As you already can attest to the difference in home stereo sound vs a small PA system.
We don't recommend those types systems (or I don't) usually because some people want more bass or plan on using it for clubs at some point & there is no point in spending money on something that will be too small for most clubs.  Strictly for home use, that should work fine for you.
