Karafun is a rather new free hosting software...I thought i'd test it.
Install went great, but it wouldn't start till I went and got the latest MS directX and installed it and got it configured...Then it popped right up....You video card must also suport 3D by the way.
Anyway, it it has a lot of good stuff going for it:
-totally free for home use
-key and tempo change
-great user interface that includes three windows, A>player controls(start, stop and play status window), B> window for reverb, mics, tempo and key controls, C>window for file library that works just like windows explorer
-will allow real time recording with up to two mics
-fantastic visual effects behind lyrics text that you can edit
-player is musical-it sounds as good as wimamp
However, it does have some cons:
-no search feature, you gotta scroll down thru your files to find what you want to play, but at least you can then que up the songs
-no songbook creation ability....hmmmm, I really miss that
All n all tho, It is a great program for home use!...I highy recommend it for that.
You wait n see....The makers will fix the items I mentioned and it will no longer be free, so go get it now.

I bet they'll offer those features, if added to the premium package. Winamp has a lot of features for free with plug-ins that I don't expect Karafun to ever have. I don't mean to dump on the software or the company I just don't expect them to provide all of that functionality.

Well, so far the biggest diff in paid Karafun is it can be used in public and it will save reverb/tempo/key presets for certain singers....The paid version doen't address sonbooks and searching either.....but I bet it will soon.
Nope, feel free to compare winamp, plugins and all other hosting software here...That was my intention.

One thing I do like about Karafun is not having to locate. audition and learn the plug-ins that I do for Winamp.

Yep, i'm thinking Karafun is so far based on free open source code using a rebundled winamp, plugins and whatever.....all free to them......But I see that they too have a special format called KFN if you rip to your CDG's...It sounds like they might go the way of MTU hoster eventually and attempt to lock you in to a full featured program with a proprietary file format like hoster and then charge big bucks for it......hmmmm

Fortunately I try to avoid converting my music to a proprietary format. Nothing against any companies at all. It's just too much like putting all my eggs in one basket.

Me too Bigdog.
If they at Karafun see that we have suggestions to consider and manage to write them into the software I would be glad to buy and use this product.

Hey, I just noticed they have a user forum!.....They are already discussing the features I mentioned....Looks like a search feature is planned soon....I also learned more about their KFN format....It doesn't seem to a problem like with MTU and their KMA crap....KMa is strictly a way to make your files only play in a licensed copy of hoster, but the KFN format is for karaoke files that you create yourself using their editor app....you can make your own karaoke files by adding text lyrics to music....and then you save thems as KFN files.
I'm telling you, if Karafun keeps it up, they are going to have a really decent little bundle here....It already has lots of really neat functions no one else has even thought of.
So far, I really like the software.

The original was an executable, not always a great idea for downloads. They can be corrupted sometimes. I hope the one I put up for you downloaded ok since I put it in RAR format. My server is still safe enough for now.
Jian, let me know if that works for you. I can't wait to hear what you think of Karafun. If they don't offer those changes soon enough I may have to go with Roxbox for a while.
I'm not in a big hurry to choose a software but deadlines do occur.
