i love timmy ho's.... Mmmmmm... large double double with a hazelnut shot (and occasionally whipped cream on top;)... I am pathetic, i know. however, i HATE doughnuts, muffins, and pastries.. so, i ONLY buy coffee and tea there.
But, when i go out, that is ALWAYS the first stop i make. THe women there ALL know me, and get my coffee made for me before I even make it to the counter to order. Nothing better:)
They call me the crazy lady though.. but, i am no lady;)

Coming late in this conversation. There are several things you should know about wirelss connection.
First, even with 802.11g, if you use WEP, your speed will degrade quickly. It's not common for you to see data transfer at less than 4Mbps if you use WEP.
There are two types of security measure you can use MAC address filtering and WEP (or any kind of encryption). They work in two different ways. MAC address filtering will only allow connections from stored MAC addresses. You have to physically enter the MAC address in to your firewalled router. If the packet does not contain the stored MAC address, the router will drop it. This works great except when you need to add a new computer to the network, you have to enter the MAC address of that computer. If you forget, it looks as if the wireless network connection does not exist.
WEP or any encryption actually encripts the data using 40 bit or 128 bit key that is unique to the network. As I mentioned before, this is significantly degrade the overall performance.
I personally use just the MAC filtering. However, this is not safe if someone has a network sniffer. They can actually see every byte that is being transferred without being on the network. However, I figure that if they have that much technology with them, they can crack my WEP anyways so I chose the speed over absolute security. I just didn't want my neighbors to use my network.
There is a new technology called MIMO (Multi In Multi Out). They use several antennas to get stronger signals from devices. This extends out the range of the wireless network. They claim that it can extend out to 1000 feet but even half that would cover all my house. One thing to check out if you have a large property and want it to work everywhere with a good signal.
Good luck with your network.

Which is what we do:)
But, eben, you have my theory.. if someone REALLY wants to "get in", they will do it, regardless, so why worry:)
Lol, i hate having people on MY network, but, i go on other's peoples, if they aren't protected..... Yeah, I am a hypocrite. Sometimes I let my neighbor in on mine, a friend of my husbands, who is only home a couple times a month, and brings his laptop home with him. (His wife lives here while he is away on course, and they don't have an internet connection.. she is computer illiterate:)
eben, haven't seen you around, i figured you would come round this conversation, and lend a techy hand:)

Hey ya Gilly. Yep, you and I think the same. If they want to spend all the money and equipment to hack in to my network, they will. I just want riff raffs out of my network.
I have been kind of busy, got laid off and been looking for a job. Also, been trying to enjoy life for a change while I am not working. Been playing golf, going to the beach, out singing during weekdays, not being on my computer much. I got a nice tan out of it. LOL
Probably will be online more now.

As I recall the faster speeds of the 802.11g are primarily for local lan/network file transfer. You will not exceed the capability of an 802.11b using a cable modem as they usually only do ~3000 KB/Sec whereas the modem would support 10000. So if you don't have a local area network then nothing to consider. Usually the more modern routers have several modes and protocols they support.

no vocals @ Thu Aug 10, 2006 6:06 pm wrote: Babs, if you go wireless BE SURE YOU FIREWALL!!!!!!!!!
if you don't, ANYONE can pull up in front of your house and hack into any computer on the wireless network. i would SERIOUSLY consider hiring someone to install and secure your wireless network. as for routers, i use the linksys as well. the only problem is that about once a year you may have to reset it all. it has only happened once to me, but i have a friend who has to reset just about every year. if you have more questions, you can PM me.
Yeah, I don't really worry about it. I could secure mine, but I don't much. I know that like me just about anyone / everyone that would use my local wireless connection would only being doing it by accident because windows accidentally attached to it, or because they want to share some free internet. Just because they can access your internet does not mean they can access your computer. That is a whole different realm. Really I don't care if neighbors or those driving by want to use my connection briefly. Now I have about 6 computers going in my house wireless - so if neighbors use to much bandwidth it would annoy me. That is the real / main issue. I could turn on WEP and WAP, but so far just Mac auth and I turn off the broadcast of the SSID. if you can't see the connection most don't know how to connect to it.

I usually disable the Windows Messenging Service. There are security threats associated, plus I get sick of all the SPAM pushed through it. You can disable the feature. Do a Google search on the subject.
