Maybe because the first singer I can remember hearing was Louis Armstrong with that wonderfully growly voice I've always had a fondness for those singers who might sound just a bit "differently" from the conventional performers.  These are the entertainers whose voices are so uniquely theirs it's nearly impossible to duplicate them.  My favorite of these undoubtedly is Louis Prima (and if you're not familiar with the name, perhaps you've heard him sing as the Monkey King in Disneys "The Jungle Book".  Do you have a favorite along these lines?

Louis Prima is the main reason I watched that movie again just a couple of years ago.

One that I can think of is Bon Scott, The previous lead singer of AC/DC. There was a certain quality of his voice that is hard to describe but it made him quite an original in rock singing.

It's easier to notice in their song "Ride On". I can't be certain of the year that song was released. It's a blues tune that goes back to the roots of the gutiarists. They warm up for shows playing blues.

love Louis Armstrong.. he and Ella are idols of mine for their sheer ability to use their voices as if they were truly musical instruments.  I would love to have even the TINIEST bit of their ability to create incredible scat that not only is dazzling but makes perfect sense.  For another unique voice... how about Jimmy Durante?  He will always have a special place in my heart and it warms it to hear him sing things like "Make Someone Happy"

Yes! Jimmy Durante.  You know, the guy really knew how to sell a song.  Thanks for remembering him.  He was also, from what I understand, a real chocolate bar of a guy, just the nicest person.

I love everyone named here so far. None of their vocal idiosyncracies seemed to be "put on" like so many nowadays. They were truly singing with their own talent and personalities shining through.

In spite of that, the first person that came to my mind when I saw this thread was Stevie Nicks. I know some people think she sounds like she is bleating, not singing, but I like her.

Screamin' Jay Hawkins. His rendition of  "I put a spell on you" is my all time favorite! If I can find a backing on this little beauty I'm going to sub it!!! Ear plugs will be provided!!!

That reminds me of another one, Phil Harris, who did the voice of "Baloo" in the Jungle Book....I just saw that again recently and was kind of disappointed they didn't let George Sanders (who did the voice of the tiger) sing because I heard him sing in "Call Me Madam" and the man had quite a great voice--never knew he could sing actually but it was him.
