Whilst I have researched the CDG format and it is fairly straight forward I have not been able to find any good technical documentation on how to actually go about writing code to create a suitable CD image / file.

I've posted this on numerous development forums but had only gneric CD writing feedback.

Does anyone know of any good artciles on this?

I typically work with VB and .net so would prefer any information to be aimed at these languages.

I think I've seen that before.

I was hoping for something that tied it all together really but I guess I'm going to have to piece it all together if that's as complete as the information gets.

Thanks

Why do you need to reinvent the wheel. There are programs out there that already allow you to create CDG songs.
Karaoke Builder Studio (almost professional looking)
MTU's Karaoke Home producer (simple easy to use)
DArt CDG creator (a little more in the professional tools very hard to use)
PowerKaraoke's Karaoke cdg creator (easiest to use with the most professional looks)
To name a few.
All have their good and bad points.  I would test their demos to see which one fits you.

The functionality needs to be integrated ito an existing system.
Mostly ripping at this stage but could do with writing as well.

I'm confused...
Do you want to know the technical aspects of how the graphics subcode is written on a disc, or advice on how to write a program to burn a CD with the graphics subcode on a disc?

Anyway, I hope your programing skills are better than your googling skills....

I need to understand how to read the subcode from the cd in order to rip it. Another part of the project is writing CDG's but I figured working on the ripping/playing of CDG's would be the easiest place to start.

So in answer to your question both.

DanInManchester,

I work for MTU, we know/write/develop just about everything to do with the RW coding.

Feel free to contact me to discuss any possibilities, as we do write custom software too!

You can find my number at: http://mtu.com/support/contact-mtu.htm on the sales line or you can email me directly through the sales email link anytime.

Regards,

DougC

No problem. I'll drop you an email sometime to give you some details.

I'm snowed under at the minute so it probably wasn't the best time to reopen my investigations but I'll get something to you in a week or two.

This has nothing to do with the CDG subcoding, otherwise known as the RW code. You have to go direct to the patent holder for information on its properties, but even with that everything is extremely vague.

It's purely a learning process. And as mentioned in a previous post, "why reinvent the wheel" when someone else has it working, work with it not against it.

this isn't reinvening the wheel in terms of the final software product but somewhat so in the development of code to read / write discs.

From what I have seen software suppliers supply pre built software solutions so I would either need to integrate their software somehow (which is unlikely to be seemless) or be supplied with a suitable pre built library/API to use work that has already been done.

There is likely to be commercial value attached to these and given that I am an experienced developer once I have enough information on the generic CD reading and writing process and the CDG subcode and my target format(s) I should be able to develop it myself at the same or lower cost.

The cost of that ebook out weights it's benefit. I can probably get enough information through forums and google. So unless that book gives specific .net code examples (which I seriously doubt!) it's not worth the investment.
